I, too, was a member of Thommo's school choir and still find myself singing, at odd mooments, Oi Boi Boi and other songs. Two points to raise. First, given that the late 1960s was only just over 20 years after World War Two and the school was in Germany, I wonder now whether Thommo was making a 'political' point by including songs such as these in the school choir's repertoire. Second, I think that the Oi Boi Boi 'song' must have been technically what is called a 'niggun' - a wordless song developed within the Jewish Hasidic community in 18th century Eastern Europe. (There is a Hasidic story about a student going to his Jewish teacher and asking him some deep religious question. His teacher gave him a fine verbal answer but the student said that he did not understand. The teacher then sung the student a niggun and, after a pause, the student said that he had fully understood.)
